Thigh high boots are a type of footwear that differ from regular shoes and boots by a long shaft that covers the leg and extends above the knees. Thigh high boots are also referred to simply as thigh boots, thigh-high boots or over-the-knee (OTK) boots. The typical shaft length for this type of boots varies from just above the knee up to the crotch area (in which case often the term Crotch boots is used). Thigh high boots often have a stiletto heel (with heights usually of at least three inches tall) and in some cases a platform on the front of the shoe part, although flat-heeled thigh high boots are not uncommon.
Different types of materials are used for the manufacture of these boots, usually various types of leather (most popularly patent leather, which is glossy, or calfskin leather, which is smooth) to synthetic materials, such as polyurethane (also referred to as PU), vinyl or latex, to certain types of fabric such as polyestery microfiber, silk and even velvet.
Thigh high boots are usually manufactured with a zipper, usually on the inside of the leg, to make them easier to wear whilst retaining the natural shape of the leg. In some cases, thigh boots are constructed without a zipper and are called pull-on boots.
This type of boots has achieved a cult status. Although thigh high boots are traditionally associated with eroticism by most, they are becoming more and more acceptable as a fashion statement. As an erotic symbol, thigh high boots are admired (and worshipped) by boot fetishists and often worn by professional dominatrices.
Thigh high boots are made by various manufacturers, the most popular of which are located in the United States. Smaller factories are located in the UK and other European countries and offer boots of various levels of quality. For the more exquisite (and expensive) brands of thigh high boots there are a few popular designers from Italy, such as Gianmarco Lorenzi, Giuseppe Zanotti and DiMarni. There’s also the option of buying custom made thigh high boots, of which manufacturers can be difficult to find.
